128 Lesson 90 How to make fast chord changes with exercises with strum 10:49 minutes

Lesson 90 How to make fast chord changes with exercises with strum 10:49 minutes

This lesson will teach you how, at times, you need to change chords in the middle of a measure. At times you may not be on each chord a full measure – so you have to change chords faster and have the appropriate strum timed in as well. If you get good at this technique and these fast changes, it will make your other changes seem so much easier. In this module we will take you through a series of three chord changes using a strum d/d/u. The exercise goes from easy to medium then hard as we will push you to the next level. Remember to continually try harder and more complex techniques as that will get you to the next level!

Lesson 89 PRACTICE ROUTINE-this is where you should be in your guitar journey- 11:43 min

In this module we want to gauge about where you should be at by this point in your guitar journey. David will discuss the principles and techniques that you want to be very proficient at by now. Take stock of the items mentioned in this module and note what needs work – write them down in a practice log and add them to your daily practice regimen. So by now you should keep improving your chordal knowledge and catalog of chords. Learn the chords and also how to enhance and embellish them while strumming in time. By now you also should be good at the F chord and proficient at open chord changes including the more challenging ones we have been working on in the video lessons. Keep a practice log of the changes that require more work and practice them daily. You also want to start to get to know the 12-note scale and start knowing the notes on the neck. Other items you should be working on and getting proficient at is developing your ear, strumming 8th note and 16th note patterns in time, embellishing chords by peppering in suspended and add chords into progressions and songs, and keeping solid time, continue to learn songs as vehicles to practice what you are learning, and practice open chord chucking. Put that guitar in your hands every day and keep rocking good people!

Lesson 88 Learn the NOTES ON THE NECK – the 12 note scale-MEMORIZE the notes 21:25 min

This lesson will teach you the 12 note scale in western music. We will build a solid foundation in this lesson for future lessons on theory to follow. There are only 12 notes in western music – THAT’S IT – no matter what instrument you are playing there are only 12 notes in western music. These must be memorized in this order. David will give you tips on how to memorize the notes and makes it easy. You will then learn how these notes relate to the guitar – they always appear in the same order – very cool on guitar – the ORDER is critical! Memorize the 12 note scale and you will know all the notes on the guitar neck and we will teach you how this miracle is performed! David also teaches you about the major scale and how all music theory is based off the major scale. David also makes the point of not to rely too much on tablature and take the time to learn the notes and intervals you are playing – not just shapes and tabs and fret numbers – know the notes and intervals you are playing and how they are related.

120 Lesson 86B Strumming, chucking, and rhythm guitar in the style of MUMFORD & SONS – 7:27 min

Lesson 86B Strumming, chucking, and rhythm guitar in the style of MUMFORD & SONS – 7:27 min

In this fun beginner lesson Ben Zinn teaches some techniques on the acoustic guitar. Here you will learn more strumming, chucking, and rhythm guitar – but here it will be played in the style of the popular band Mumford & Sons. Ben plays this lesson on acoustic but you can do these techniques on electric as well. This lesson is in the key of C major. Ben starts off by first showing the chords – C, Dm, Em, F, G, Am, G7 (sub for G diminished). Ben then teaches you how to combine these chords for interesting sounding progressions. Ben then teaches a technique similar to the chucking technique you learned in previous lessons. This technique utilizes more of your fingertips and fingernails brushing on the strings to create a certain sound. This technique is called “claw hammer” and its borrowed from banjo players. Ben teaches the technique and practice it playing the bass note part of the chord and doing some strumming. Ben then teaches rhythm patterns using this technique. Ben then uses the technique through some chord changes. Try this with other chord progressions and add it to your list of embellishments you can do to add interest to your playing – have fun and stay positive – remember that your playing is an evolution!

119 Lesson 86A Acoustic embellishing with chucking, muting, and building rhythmic grooves – 11:33 min

Lesson 86A Acoustic embellishing with chucking, muting, and building rhythmic grooves – 11:33 min

In this lesson Ben Zinn continues teaching rhythm techniques in a style inspired by popular acoustic artist Ed Sheeran. Here Ben will use easy chords and finger style chucking and muting to get some nice acoustic sounds and embellishments. For this lesson Ben uses a capo on the 5th fret but you can capo the guitar anywhere depending on what key you want to play this in and the sounds you are going after. Ben first establishes a groove with an Em chord. Ben teaches how to create rhythmic feel with the right hand. This rhythmic feel will be the foundation for all the chord changes. Strike the low note with the thumb and brush the strings with the fingers similar sounding to the chucking we did in the previous lesson. Try to get that thumb then fingers movements down first – get comfortable with that first just on the one chord. Then Ben starts adding elements and building more complex rhythmic elements. Add these techniques to your playing arsenal and try them with other chords and progressions. Get creative and have fun with them! Keep up all that hard work on that guitar and stay positive – remember……..YOU CAN DO IT!!
