Learn how to SWEEP PICK – shred guitar lesson on sweep picking – 7:22 min

In this shred guitar lesson Willie teaches all about the technique of sweep picking. This is a killer technique with a very unique sound. Here you will be moving up and down the strings in a sweep motion rather than individually picking each string. In this lesson we will use a major arpeggio as an example to practice this technique. Learn the needed right and left hand techniques to work this picking and remember that this is advanced and will take quite a while to get proficient at – take your time and you will get it.

In this lesson Willie teaches some right hand tapping licks ala Eddie Van Halen. Here he will tap right hand notes in a minor pentatonic scale for a bluesy feel but with the modern sound of the right hand tapping. See the scales and tapped notes up close and use this lesson to springboard your tapping licks – try in different keys and with different scales. Remember to mute out all the unwanted notes using the two handed muting techniques we learned in earlier lessons.

In this lesson Willie teaches how to add right hand tapping to sweep picking for some killer sounds. This is an advanced technique that not only incorporates sweep picking but also hammering, pull offs and slides. Willie starts with an A major arpeggio and you will see that arpeggio up close with all the fingering and frets diagrammed out. You can also see that arpeggio in the written lessons section of the site diagrammed out with lots of other arpeggios.  Then once the arpeggio is swept Willie shows you how to throw in some cool tapping and sliding to add some spice – take it slow at first as this will take some time to get solid – but stay positive and you can do it!

Intro to SWEEP PICKING – here’s a picking exercise to get you ready to sweep pick – 10:40 minutes  

This lesson will introduce you to the picking technique called SWEEP PICKING. It is a very cool technique that takes a little bit of work to get down solid – but it is way worth it. The main thing when sweep picking is to remember to sweep down all strings with one downstroke and then one upstroke – laying the pick down on the strings and let it glide up and down the strings. You don’t want to individually pick each string – that is a mistake many make when learning this technique – it is a gliding motion.  In this module you will learn a back-pick exercise that will get you familiar with this gliding technique when sweeping notes. Be careful not to play all the notes together as a whole chord – you want to hear each individual note clean and distinct. Sweep picking is a technique that you can get good at pretty quickly if you add it in to your practice regimen. Think of a sweep pick as one giant downstroke or one giant upstroke.

In this lesson you will also learn about the importance of good phrasing and rhythm in your lead lines – you will learn how to take a line and turn it into many lines by turning around the rhythm. David teaches you not just to learn licks but rather learn FROM the lick – why does it work, what intervals are being utilized, how can I turn it around and make it my own. Remember its all about taking the notes and doing things with them that are musically interesting and then phrasing them together in a cohesive package so not to sound boxy, fragmented, or disjointed. And to also have good rhythm in your lead playing – that is crucial! Rock on!
