15 Learn to SOLO OVER EACH CHORD and tie it all together – 37:51min

Learn to SOLO OVER EACH CHORD and tie it all together – 37:51 minutes

In this lesson David will take a four chord progression of Dmaj7 – Bm7 – Em7 – A7 and explain the two choices that you have when you are soloing or improvising – playing what relates to all or playing over each chord, what he calls treating each chord “like a separate event”. In this lesson David will teach you how to methodically analyze chords and chord progressions and start to look at what to play over each chord. Treating each chord as a separate event gives you a real interesting and sophisticated sound. David goes chord by chord and gives you some choices of scales, modes, and arpeggios that you will want to try over each. Practice over the jam track listed below and check the written lesson for some arpeggio shapes. Have fun and remember to emphasize the root of the mode and land on strong chord tones for some added pop!

41 Intro to SWEEP PICKING – here’s a picking exercise to get you ready to sweep pick – 10:40

Intro to SWEEP PICKING – here’s a picking exercise to get you ready to sweep pick – 10:40 minutes

This lesson will introduce you to the picking technique called SWEEP PICKING. It is a very cool technique that takes a little bit of work to get down solid – but it is way worth it. The main thing when sweep picking is to remember to sweep down all strings with one downstroke and then one upstroke – laying the pick down on the strings and let it glide up and down the strings. You don’t want to individually pick each string – that is a mistake many make when learning this technique – it is a gliding motion.  In this module you will learn a back-pick exercise that will get you familiar with this gliding technique when sweeping notes. Be careful not to play all the notes together as a whole chord – you want to hear each individual note clean and distinct. Sweep picking is a technique that you can get good at pretty quickly if you add it in to your practice regimen. Think of a sweep pick as one giant downstroke or one giant upstroke.

14 Lead guitar improvisation & solo concepts – learn FROM the lick – Guitar Lesson 11:21 minutes

Lead guitar improvisation  & solo concepts – learn FROM the lick – Guitar Lesson 11:21 minutes

In this lesson David explain the two choices that you have when you are soloing or improvising – playing what relates to all or playing over each chord, what he calls treating each chord “like a separate event”. In this lesson you will also learn about the importance of good phrasing and rhythm in your lead lines – you will learn how to take a line and turn it into many lines by turning around the rhythm. David teaches you not just to learn licks but rather learn FROM the lick – why does it work, what intervals are being utilized, how can I turn it around and make it my own. Remember its all about taking the notes and doing things with them that are musically interesting and then phrasing them together in a cohesive package so not to sound boxy, fragmented, or disjointed. And to also have good rhythm in your lead playing – that is crucial! Rock on!
