This lesson will teach you theory behind what chords make up each major key and why. There are some formulas to follow that are absolutely critical to understand so you can apply them to the guitar and to your songwriting. This is a critical aspect of songwriting and will really help your understanding of chords and their relationships. In this module you will learn how to harmonize the MAJOR scale and how to build the chords that are in each major key. There is a reason why certain chords sound good together. A certain group of chords will always pretty much sound good together – they are the chords in that key that are all made from combinations of the major scale notes in that key. Now any chord can appear in any key, but the group of chords that make up that key are much more likely to appear in that key than most other chords. We will also start putting some chords together and creating a song. This is part three of a three-part lesson.

Learn a cool JAZZ PROGRESSION while learning  more about MUSIC THEORY – 13:21 min

In this module you will learn a cool jazzy progression. This progression is in the key of D major. The progression will be Dmaj7 – Bm7 – Em7 – A7. Soon I will have a jam track of this progression loaded onto the site and you can practice lead guitar over these chords. David also continues to build on your music theory and key signature knowledge. David also plays a I-IV-V progression with minor 7th chords and a 7#9 chord in the turnaround and adds a slide for embellishments. David also teaches the difference between a major 7th chord and a 7th chord. David has close up shots of all the chords in this lesson and goes into the theory behind them. David also discusses importance of knowing a lot of chords as well as how to embellish them.

Learn the NOTES ON THE NECK – the 12 note scale – MEMORIZE these notes in this order – 21:25 min

This lesson will teach you the 12 note scale in western music. We will build a solid foundation in this lesson for future lessons on theory to follow. There are only 12 notes in western music – THAT’S IT – no matter what instrument you are playing there are only 12 notes in western music. These must be memorized in this order. David will give you tips on how to memorize the notes and makes it easy. You will then learn how these notes relate to the guitar – they always appear in the same order – very cool on guitar – the ORDER is critical! Memorize the 12 note scale and you will know all the notes on the guitar neck and we will teach you how this miracle is performed! David also teaches you about the major scale and how all music theory is based off the major scale. David also makes the point of not to rely too much on tablature and take the time to learn the notes and intervals you are playing – not just shapes and tabs and fret numbers – know the notes and intervals you are playing and how they are related. This lesson will teach you a bit more guitar terminology that you will need to know as you continue your guitar journey. You need to understand the guitar lingo, or terminology, so you can communicate in a musical manner. In this lesson you will learn what is a half step, whole step, whole tone, and semi tone and why they are so important.  Remember, learning some theory will make you a better guitarist – so dont shy away from it – it is very important.

In this lesson we continue defining basic music terms that you will need to understand before moving to future theory modules. It is so important that as a guitarist you can speak and understand the language of music. In this module you will learn the terms and symbols for flat, sharp, and minor. You will also learn what an interval is and how they work on stringed instruments. You will also begin to learn how to read the symbols on chord charts. David also teaches you what an octave is and how they sound in a song example. Rock on good people!

Chord construction theory and major scale building – Guitar Lesson 9:20 minutes

This lesson will teach you the music theory behind what is a fifth, or a flat seventh, or a 3rd – what are these intervals, why are they so important and how can I utilize them in my playing. This lesson emphasizes learning the notes and intervals as opposed to just learning the shapes or fingerings. You will also learn how to build a major scale in any key and how chords are constructed. David also teaches you a neat little I-IV-V finder and the importance of making strong solo statements with your landing notes and emphasizing the notes which make up the chords – the chord tones. David also explains how these critical techniques can really improve your phrasing and lead lines.

This lesson will teach you the 12 notes in western music and will show you how using that 12 note scale you can learn all the notes on the entire fretboard. We will also teach you some tricks and easy ways to find certain notes without taking the time to count up each individual note. We will make it fun and easy! Knowing the notes on the neck is absolutely essential to get your playing to the next level and to full understand and apply more advanced lessons and techniques to come. Put a few minutes a day into learning the notes on the neck and we will help you set a goal of learning them all over the next few months. This module will also teach you a cool note finding drill that will help you to learn the notes over the entire neck.
