In this lesson Ben Zinn takes you through some killer rock soloing devices and techniques inspired by Terry Kath of the band Chicago fame. Ben plays over a classic rock rhythm and Ben teaches you some phrasing and rhythmic ideas to help you play over longer solos. This help you shift gears during your solo as you dont want to blow all your solo ideas too fast and too early but rather pace yourself through the solo. Ben uses A minor and A blues scale for these examples. Ben goes over the scale positions and then gets into the examples. This lesson helps you to come up with rhythmic ideas within your soloing. Build rocking licks using Harmonic Minor scale TOM WAITS  inspired lesson – 8:46 min

In this lesson Ben Zinn teaches how to build riffs and fills using the Harmonic Minor  Scale in the style of Tom Waits. Ben first goes over how to get the tone in this lesson using some tremolo, reverb, and some slapback delay. These are neat effect tools to use to help get this tone. We are in the key of Em and this lesson is based on a two chord vamp, Em-B7. This chord progression in minor key with a major type five chord suggest using the harmonic minor scale as one soloing avenue. Ben teaches some E harmonic minor shapes and its an exotic sounding scale. Remember that the harmonic minor scale is very close interval wise to the Natural Minor Scale. Its basically a natural minor scale with a raised 7th degree – thats it – harmonic minor scale intervals – 1,2,b3,4,5,b6,7 – lay these vamp down and try some of these licks and make some new ones using this scale – put your own spin on them and have fun with this scale!
