As discussed in previous lessons – it is absolutely critical to memorize the 12-note scale and to start familiarizing yourself with the notes on the neck. In this lesson David gives you some exercises to learn the notes on the neck cold. Knowing the notes opens so many doors for you in your guitar journey and will make things easier and you move your playing forward. David also discusses the importance of not relying too much on tablature but also take the extra time to learn the notes on the neck. David also adds in a little music theory on the major scale and also on relative majors and minors to help tie things together. You can do it – just add these exercises into your practice regimen and work on them slowly a little each day – you dont have to get the notes cold overnight – like the rest of your playing this will be an evolution. This lesson is all about scales – what they are and why they are important. David makes music theory easy and fun and applies it on the guitar. David defines what scales are and he gives you examples and plays them on guitar. Scales are the building blocks for lead guitar and some song writing so its important that you understand how they will fit in your musical journey. All music theory goes back to the major scale – its so important. We have all heard the major scale, it goes do, re, me, fa, so, la, ti. David plays the major scale in various keys for you on guitar and other scales – eventually as you move through the modules you will learn more and more about all the different scales and how to use them.

In this lesson you can tune to David’s guitar which is tuned to standard tuning or A440. Strings low to high are tuned E,A,D,G,B,E. David also gives you some tips on tuning your guitar to ensure that your guitar both is in tune, and then will stay in tune. In this lesson we will get you thinking about the top ten critical aspects of your playing and which ones need to be honed in on and studied.
