Chord comping and warm up progressions and rhythms Danny Gatton inspired lesson – 7:21 min

In this lesson Dave Nassie teaches some cool warm ups and cool progressions and chord movements using dominant chords. This is a great lesson to help you with your chord comping and get outside the box with your playing. This lesson is inspired by Danny Gatton. Danny Gatton was an American guitarist who fused rockabilly, jazz, and country styles to create his own distinctive style of playing. And here Dave takes a more jazzy approach to these devices. Dave starts off playing dominant chords and utilizes a G7 chord and outlines a I-IV-V progression with passing tones, dominant chords, and minor 7th chords. These chord movements are great warm up exercises if you move them quickly as Dave did in the intro. Dave also teaches how to substitute or “comp” these chords into your progressions. Dave uses chromatic movements – moving up and down in half steps to add passing tone color. Try these and experiment with these chords for new sounds in your playing arsenal – have fun!
