Classic rockabilly rhythm devices and licks made easy with Jeffrey Paul Ross – 13:01 min
In this lesson Jeff Ross teaches some fun rockabilly rhythms and licks. Jeff plays over a funky rhythm track and teaches different types of licks through the progression. The rhythm is in the key of E and starts with an E7 chord. Notice how Jeff plays off that low E string to get a cool Rockabilly flavor. Jeff then gets into a low string riff skipping strings between the low E and D strings. Practice the riff slow and it takes time to get it clean while skipping the A string. This is a very common rockabilly device that you will want to get comfortable with. Then the rhythm goes to the A chord and Jeff does a walk up to the A7 chord. Again this walk up is very trademark rockabilly. Jeff continues going through the progression and you will continue to learn licks and rhythmic devices along the way. Add these techniques to your rockabilly playing and put your own spin on them. Stay creative and have fun!
Rockabilly rhythm ideas with bass note walk downs inspired by Scotty Moore – 2:48 min
In this fun and quick lesson Jeff Ross teaches some fun Rockabilly rhythm ideas in the style of the great Scotty Moore. Scotty was Elvis Presley’s guitar player in the early part of Elvis’s career. Add a little slap back delay for that textbook rockabilly tone. This lesson is in the key of A and Jeff teaches how to bounce back and forth between a riff and a few A7 chords. Jeff first teaches the very cool bass walk – its a chromatic walk down and Jeff uses his thumb to play these notes to give more of a sputtering sound. Then he starts to add the A7 chords and notice how he slides into the chord to give it some extra spice. Keep the quarter notes thumping on the A string for added effect. Experiment with these rhythm ideas and devices and make them your own. Add them to your playing arsenal and experiment with them – and enjoy!
