In this lesson Mike Scuilli teaches some fun Psychobilly rhythm ideas inspired by the Necromantics. This is a fun style of guitar that can add some new flair to your playing. Learn some fun devices using an E power chord as a pedal between the E and G notes. This is a type of shuffle rhythm very popular in this style of play. In between this rhythm Mike adds in some power chords – C5 and B5, G5 and F#5 chords added into the shuffle rhythm. Learn to embellish an A power chord next to add some cool sounds – very similar to how a bluesman may play the chord. In this lesson Ben Zinn teaches some fun vibey understated approaches toward playing a chord progression with air and space between the notes. Ben starts the lesson off talking about tone and a big part of this playing style is taking advantage of the sounds created by the guitar, amp, and effects that we are after today. Ben pairs the idea of a clean tube amp tone with a lot of reverb and a guitar with a term bar – that is a great way to start off getting this rockabilly airily tone. Ben then gets into the chord progression that he will utilize throughout this lesson. Ben goes over the chord voicings and fingerings used:Bm – D – A – E. Ben then teaches how you can start putting a vibe on these chords using vibrato. You can also do pre-bending of the term bar with the sound of the chord raising up to pitch – this is a very popular technique in this style. Ben then builds on top of this foundation and starts to use arpeggiating patterns and higher register chords to get different sounds. Try adding these techniques and tonal options to your playing and get creative with them – enjoy!

In this lesson Jason teaches some killer surf rhythm and lick ideas. Jason first goes over the gear he utilizes for this lesson and getting that cool surf tone. He talks about the guitar and amp he is using for these sounds. Jason bases this lesson around an open A ringing and then playing riffs in between. Much of the notes picked at first are all on the G string – so it makes the riff easy and fun. Jason also teaches some cool chords that can be played along with these licks. These chords are used in surf guitar all the time so be sure and sound all the notes and add a little tremolo arm to get the wavy effect when playing the chords. Just a slight push on the tremolo arm – you dont need a lot as its a subtle effect. Try these licks and chords and experiment with them – vary them, change the order, and put your own spin on them – stay creative and have fun!
