Old School Acoustic Blues fingerstyle rhythms, devices and techniques – 9:04 min

In this lesson Ben Zinn teaches some fun old school acoustic finger style blues guitar. This lesson is in the style of Mississippi John Hurt and has a folky, rag time feel to it. Ben starts off the lesson with some basic approaches to the finger style technique. Ben starts the lesson on a basic open position C chord and Ben goes over how to keep steady quarter notes going with your thumb on your pick hand. Then change chords keeping the groove going. Keep in mind to keep that pinky finger free with the F chord so you can grab some embellishing notes. Practice rocking the bass notes back and forth at first between the C and F chords. Ben then adds in some more fingerpicking on the chords. He shows the pick hand pattern and how to syncopate other notes in between the bass notes. Ben then continues to build the pattern and add notes as he builds up the melody. Practice these one at a time and slowly build up all the devices. Once you have these patterns down you can change them up, add or take away, embellish, and make them your own – put your own spin on them and stay creative – rock on!
