66 Mixolydian soloing strategies & lick ideas in the style of BILLY CORGAN of the SMASHING PUMPKINS – 10:00 min

Mixolydian soloing strategies & lick ideas in the style of BILLY CORGAN of the SMASHING PUMPKINS – 10:00 min

In this lesson Ben Zinn teaches some cool Mixolydian soloing and lick ideas in the style of the SMASHING PUMPKINS Billy Corgan. Modal playing can bring a whole different set of moods to your playing. That is the great thing about the modes of the major scale. Each one produces its own unique mood. Here Ben teaches about the 5th mode of the major scale, Mixolydian. Mixolydian is always the 5th mode in any major key as is basically a major scale with a flatted 7th – the scale degrees of Mixolydian are 1,2,3,4,5,6,b7. One use of the mixolydian mode is to play them over dominant chords like seventh chords, as 7th chords have a flat 7th in them so it works great. In this lesson Ben demonstrates some scales in licks using E Mixolydian, which is the same as A major but emphasizing the E notes. Try some of these licks and listen to the mood created by Mixolydian – use lots of bends to get that rock flavor as Ben demonstrates. Try adding some Mixolydian to your playing arsenal and try in different keys over different jam tracks. Enjoy and rock on!
